After tracking the analytics of my tweets linking my app-based news story about March Madness and the effect it had financially on Salt Lake City’s economy I found that I had a bit more of a reach through social media than I originally thought. I started posting right away and was adamant about starting with a simple sentence and the link to my article. I found that while this strategy did get me clicks, it hardly ever got me any retweets or actual likes which was frustrating. I decided to add images relating to my article which got me a bit more likes and a ton more clicks, however, adding videos and gifs got me by far the most attention.

I also made sure to pay attention to timing of my posts throughout the whole two weeks.

I started posting later in the evening to see how many people would see my post. I saw a huge amount of people looking at my post in the middle of the day around lunch time. For example, a tweet I posted at around 8:30PM only got five clicks while one at noon got me upwards of 40 clicks. These analytics show me that the best time of the day to post is in the middle of the day and I can reach more of my followers if I use images or gifs along with my post. I also found that the use of humor also attracted many more clicks. When my tweets were less serious and more fun, I saw that more people wanted to retweet, like and generally look at my post.

In the future I think I would do better about posting my story on various social media sites and use images and gifs to attract people to my post or story. Similarly, in the future I want to practice using more humor to attract people to my stories because that definitely stood out from the more generic posts I had. Overall, the use of graphics, humor and post timing made the difference in how many people saw and interacted with my post.
